OPIE Software Sponsors Gainvesville BarCamp
OPIE was a proud sponsor of the 5th Annual BarCamp GNV, which celebrated five years of knowledge sharing, community building, and networking. BarCamp GNV is an unconference – an ad-hoc gathering born from the desire for people to share and learn in an open environment. Sessions are given on a variety of topics, and the day is created collaboratively – built by the attendees who have a topic, story, knowledge, or experience to share with the rest of the community. OPIE staff both attended and hosted sessions for the tech community. Presenting from OPIE included Priya Rudradas, Justin Doan, and Jay Rosen.
Priya Rudradas (Chief Operating Officer) spoke with Usha Suryadevara (Director of Development, Info Tech), Jenn Edge (Assistant Director of Development, Info Tech), Sue Rocher (Software Developer III, Infinite Energy), and Elise Carmichael (Enterprise Solutions Strategist, Tricentis) about the launch of “We Advance Technology Together”. The goal of We Advance Tech Together, is to bring women technologists together so they can share their experiences with others, connect, and stay inspired! Accelerate the rate of women entering the tech space ensuring that they are equipped with the skills, education and sense of community they need to empower their journey.
Justin Doan (Software Developer) shared his personal story of how he transitioned careers from Accounting to Software Development. Justin aims to help others in the community empower themselves to do the same in his talk outlining the critical decisions to make and steps to take from ‘technically illiterate’ to paid developer, while drawing parallels to lessons learned on his own journey.
Jay Rosen (Marketing) illustrated how his artistic career evolved through collaborations with designers, musicians, film-makers, and everyday strangers with the “Mirror Visionwear” project. The wearable mirrored sculptures and mirrored geodesic dome toured all over North America 4 times with the synth-pop band TIME. Although Jay was not physically traveling with the band, he demonstrated how social media can be utilized as a tool to find and collect imagery from anywhere – generating new stories and roadmaps from the geo-tagged hashtag #MirrorVisionwear.
